Collaborating to Reduce Suicide in Alaska: Attending to the Role of Firearms

This talk will focus on the role of access to firearms in suicide and describe the empirical evidence that demonstrates that reducing access to firearms to those at risk can reduce both overall and firearms suicide rates. The talk will also cover emerging best practices in firearm-related suicide prevention, including lethal means counselling and collaboration between public health practitioners and gun owners.
Objectives of the talk include: 1) participants will become familiar with the epidemiology of suicide in the US and in Alaska, 2) participants will understand the role of access to firearms in suicide and 3) participants will be conversant in emerging best practices for reducing access to firearms as a suicide prevention strategy.
