ALPHA Award Nominations
The Awards Committee of the Alaska Public Health Association requests nominations for awards to be given at the Alaska Health Summit each year. Alaska Public Health Association awards provide an opportunity to recognize your colleagues and acknowledge their special contribution to ALPHA and public health in Alaska. In your nomination, please describe the service or achievement for which the individual or organization should be recognized. The Awards Committee will select the honorees from among those nominated.

Distinguished Award Categories:
Alaska Meritorious Health Service Award
Recognizes the achievements of an individual in the area of health in Alaska over an extended period of time, not less than 10 years. The person honored may be active or retired. A nominee does not need to be an ALPHA member.
Alaska Health Achievement Award
Recognizes an individual whose contributions to the health of Alaska are recent or current. A nominee does not need to be an ALPHA member.
ALPHA Service Award for Long Term and Short Term Service
Recognizes two individuals who have made outstanding contributions to ALPHA, one over the course of several years and the other during the past 1 to 2 years, by promoting ALPHA’s purpose, “to advance the public’s health” (from bylaws). Nominees will have demonstrated one or more of the following ALPHA values:
- Equity – Worked to identify and raise awareness about public health disparities in Alaska and advocated for specific measures to eliminate these disparities.
- Leadership - Guided and influenced issues affecting the public’s health in Alaska.
- Partnering– Collaborating with other public health advocates on initiatives.
- Public Involvement – Advocated for the education of Alaskans on public health issues and for their direct involvement in supporting the improvement of public health throughout Alaska.
- Public Health Law – Participated in developing and advocating for sound public health law and policy.
- Nominees must either be a current or past member of ALPHA.
Alaska Community Service Award
Recognizes an organization, business or group making a significant contribution to improving the health of Alaskans. It is ALPHA’s intent that nominees outside the public health tradition be considered for this award. A nominee does not need to be an ALPHA member.
Barbara Berger "Excellence in Public Health Award"
The ALPHA Awards Committee will coordinate with AHEC to prevent duplication.Recognizes an individual who has made special, unique, or substantial contributions to Alaska in the field of public health. A nominee does not need to be an ALPHA member. The award is given in honor of the memory of Barbara Berger, health educator and Past President of ALPHA.
Additional Criteria/Requirements for all ALPHA Awards:
- Awards will be made (for each type) only if a suitable candidate is nominated.
- For each award type, not more than 2 awards shall be given during any calendar year.
- Award decisions will be made by the Awards Committee based on the submission of a completed nomination form. Oral nominations will not be accepted.
- Completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Awards Committee no later than the established deadline.
